How to Overcome Fear of Change This Fall
Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons - especially when I lived up north. I love the brisk air in the mornings and evenings, the brilliant colors of changing leaves, bonfires, sweater weather, and a good pumpkin spice coffee. While Florida and South Carolina may not get as cool or crisp as it does up north, fall still settles in and the sense of change still lingers. School routines shift, schedules pick up, humidity lessens, and life seems to speed forward after the slower pace of summer. For many women, this season brings both excitement and unease. You might feel the quiet pull of new beginnings—while also noticing a sense of overwhelm or fatigue.
Change, even when it’s something we want, can feel surprisingly difficult. If you are like me, it takes me time to adjust to change. Not all types of change, but ones that feel big or risky take time. We pray for direction, ask God for growth, and then find ourselves clinging tightly to what’s familiar. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why is it so hard to change, even when I’m ready for it?”—you’re not alone. The truth is, we are designed to need stability, yet He also calls us into transformation. Navigating that tension can be challenging—but it’s also where growth begins.
Why Change Feels So Hard
Our brains naturally prefer what’s familiar. Familiar routines and predictable outcomes make us feel safe. When something shifts—whether it’s a new job, a change in relationships, or a fresh calling from God—our nervous system can interpret it as a threat. The result is often anxiety, procrastination, or emotional overwhelm. The key work here is interpretation. Just because our nervous system detects a threat does not mean we are actually in a state of danger in the present.
Seasonal transitions can magnify uncomfortable feelings. Even subtle changes in light, rhythm, or daily structure can affect our mood and energy. Spiritually, these transitions may bring questions like, “Am I where I’m supposed to be?” or “What if I step out and fail?”
But Scripture reminds us that change is not something to fear—it’s something God uses for our good. “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19) Change can be uncomfortable, but it’s also the soil where faith takes root.
Recognizing Signs of Fear of Change
Fear of change doesn’t always look like panic—it often hides in everyday patterns such as:
Avoidance: Putting off decisions or avoiding what feels uncertain.
Procrastination: Staying busy with small tasks to avoid what really matters.
Irritability or Emotional Sensitivity: Feeling easily frustrated or unsettled when life feels unpredictable.
Overthinking: Replaying every possible “what if” and doubting your ability—or God’s faithfulness—to handle what’s next.
Lack of Restful Sleep: Struggling to fall asleep or waking up several times throughout the night.
Do any of these sound familiar?. These are natural responses to uncertainty yet also an invitation to engage in deeper trust.
